Together with construction consultant Cowi, Dissing+Weitling is tasked with ensuring that the 3rd Limfjord Connection is harmoniously integrated into the existing landscape and infrastructure around Aalborg.
"Optimized, well-integrated, and balanced." These are some of the words Jesper Henriksen, head of the bridge team at Dissing+Weitling, uses to describe the design of the low bridge and several other structures for the new 3rd Limfjord Connection.
In collaboration with Cowi, Dissing+Weitling will ensure that the new fjord crossing blends harmoniously into existing landscape and infrastructure around Aalborg.
Preliminary Investigations
Before construction begins, preliminary studies are scheduled for 2025. These investigations will cover route alignment, intersecting roads, stormwater basins, potentially contaminated areas, and possible raw material extraction zones.
Achieving Architectural Harmony
Dissing+Weitling has extensive experience in creating architectural harmony in major infrastructure projects, including the new Storstrøm Bridge, the Øresund Connection, the Great Belt Link, the Fehmarn Belt Link, and the ShenZhong Link.
"We start most projects with our own site analyses, carefully assessing the landscape and identifying existing design elements—such as portals and bridge piers on smaller nearby bridges. These studies help us discover how to create a cohesive, well-integrated design," explains Jesper Henriksen.
Much like the Øresund Connection, a key aspect of the 3rd Limfjord Connection is the coordination of the overall architectural design—including the design of ramps, tunnel and portal buildings, and noise barriers.
"With every project, we strive to create an optimal design—one that is beautiful, well-balanced, and enhances the travel experience. The bridge should feel like a natural, harmonious part of its surroundings. This is an exciting challenge, and we look forward to collaborating with the Danish Road Directorate and Cowi," says Henriksen.
