Pingshan Light Rail Stations
Infrastructure upgrade in Shenzhen
Increasing traffic in and around the Chinese city of Shenzhen calls for new and better transport solutions. Dissing+Weitling has designed 12 new light rail stations for the city’s Pingshan district to improve public transportation and mobility in the area.

The 12 light rail stations are characterised by their elegant architecture that both creates continuity on the route and changes to suit each location. The design incorporates the fractal roof: a serial and angled geometry roof with thin edges that imbibe the construction with a sword-like lightness. This makes the stations recognisable day and night. The ticketing area is located in a ‘box’ below the platform and it too has a clear mode of expression, with lamellae that give the design weight and help keep temperatures down. At the same time, the construction is resistant to earthquakes and other extreme weather.
Dissing+Weitling is collaborating with BYD (Build Your Dreams) on the project: one of the world’s largest electric car and battery manufacturers.
Dissing+Weitling’s commitment in China includes building and mobility projects in large cities such as Shenzhen and Xiamen. These cities are densely populated and demand intelligent architectural solutions and more human urban spaces. Since 2008, Shenzhen has held the 'City of Design' title due to its membership of the UNESCO Creative City Network and as recognition of the area’s great innovative strength and large share of design firms and designers.
